Higgins Cemetary

A few of us Beechwood folks were discussing the fact that on any topographic map (and Google maps) you will find “Higgins Cemetery” located at approximately the intersection of Stagecoach and Beechwood. No one knew anything about it so I went to the County Historical Society and found the following information. It appears that at most it was a very small family plot from the 19th Century. If anyone knows anything about the headstone, please let us know.

A man named W.E. Peters recorded on November 21, 1938 that in Range 14, Township 9, Section 19 is located Higgins Cemetery. Below is the text verbatim.

Michael Higgins. Died June 28, 1870. Aged 74 Y. 7 M. 21 D.

Mary McClintoc. Wife of M. Higgins.

Note:

Two graves only. Both inscriptions are on the one monument which is surrounded by a heavy dressed-stone wall about eighteen by twenty feet.

Michael Higgins was a son of Michael Andrew Higgins who is understood to have been buried in the Reynolds Cemetery, in Section 26, Town 9, Range 14.

Inasmuch as the field, then owned by Mr. Michael Higgins, was sterile and, therefore, profitless, he desired to be buried there, since, as he said, “nothing could be raised on it.” W.E.P.
