Higgins Cemetary

A few of us Beechwood folks were discussing the fact that on any topographic map (and Google maps) you will find “Higgins Cemetery” located at approximately the intersection of Stagecoach and Beechwood. No one knew anything about it so I went to the County Historical Society and found the following information. It appears that at most it was a very small family plot from the 19th Century. If anyone knows anything about the headstone, please let us know.

A man named W.E. Peters recorded on November 21, 1938 that in Range 14, Township 9, Section 19 is located Higgins Cemetery. Below is the text verbatim.

Michael Higgins. Died June 28, 1870. Aged 74 Y. 7 M. 21 D.

Mary McClintoc. Wife of M. Higgins.

Note:

Two graves only. Both inscriptions are on the one monument which is surrounded by a heavy dressed-stone wall about eighteen by twenty feet.

Michael Higgins was a son of Michael Andrew Higgins who is understood to have been buried in the Reynolds Cemetery, in Section 26, Town 9, Range 14.

Inasmuch as the field, then owned by Mr. Michael Higgins, was sterile and, therefore, profitless, he desired to be buried there, since, as he said, “nothing could be raised on it.” W.E.P.

Beechwood Dues, etc

Hello Beechwood Neighbors,

I hope everyone is well and made it through the tough winter. I am emailing because I need to ask for this year’s dues. Please note that at the spring meeting/picnic it was agreed that we would increase annual dues to $50the first increase in 27 years. Why the increase? First, our expenses exceeded our revenue last year by more than $100 and that ate into our savings. We obviously cannot continue to pay more than we collect (this isn’t Congress!).  Second, a few expenses continue to increase. For example, we now pay more than $20 a month for the security lights.  Third, it is simply a good idea to have a small amount saved for unexpected expenses. Thirty-five dollars a year will no longer allow us to do that.

This is the first increase since 1983 when the dues went from $25 to $35;  Reagan was president, Billie Jean was on the radio and we were watching Dynasty and Hill Street Blues!

The spreadsheet is posted at our webpage HERE (PDF) and shows where our dues went last year. They paid for property taxes, insurance for the lake and land surrounding the lake, a new picnic table (Roman didn’t charge for the stain or labor), and to stock the pond with fish that keep the algae to a minimum.

We have two ways to pay the dues. You can send /drop off the money to me with the attached form (PDF), or you can pay on-line at our web page, using Paypal. http://beechwoodofathens.com/?p=60

If you have any changes to the directory (see attached), please send that to me either by email or with the form.  An updated directory will be posted on the webpage in May.

I hope everyone heard the good news that Seven-fest will not take place at the red barn! It has moved, with the parking, trash, and all of the other hassles.

Finally, the Cornell Road sign was moved to other side of the road, so it is now visible. Thanks Roman!

Thank you,
